What Is a VGA to HDMI Adapter Cable?

A VGA to HDMI adapter cable converts an analog VGA signal (plus analog audio via 3.5mm) into a digital HDMI signal. It allows legacy devices with only VGA output — such as older desktop PCs, laptops, and industrial equipment — to connect to modern displays that only have HDMI inputs.

How It Works

This is an active converter, not a passive cable. The VGA analog signal is digitized by a chip inside the connector housing, then output as HDMI. Because the conversion requires power, most VGA to HDMI adapters include a USB cable for power (connect to a USB port on the PC or a wall adapter).

Important: Directional

VGA to HDMI cables are directional. They only work from VGA source to HDMI display. They cannot be used in reverse (HDMI source to VGA display). For that, you need an HDMI to VGA adapter.

Common Use Cases

  • Connecting an older desktop PC to a modern HDMI TV
  • Using a legacy laptop with a new HDMI monitor
  • Connecting industrial equipment with VGA output to a digital signage display
  • Classroom PC with VGA output to an HDMI projector
  • POS system upgrade to HDMI monitor

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Does this cable support audio?
A: Yes, it includes a 3.5mm audio input that embeds stereo audio into the HDMI signal. You must connect the 3.5mm plug to your source's audio output.

Q: Does it support 4K?
A: No. VGA is an analog signal and the converter chip typically supports up to 1080p. 4K is not possible with VGA to HDMI conversion.

Q: Do I need to install drivers?
A: No. It is plug-and-play. However, you may need to adjust display settings on your computer to output 1080p.

Q: Can I use it in reverse (HDMI to VGA)?
A: No. This cable only works from VGA to HDMI. For HDMI to VGA, you need a different adapter.
