1. Connector Type
Most cars use the standard 16-pin OBD2 port. Trucks may need a 9-pin adapter. Older BMWs need a 20-pin adapter. Confirm your vehicle's port before buying.
2. Cable Length
Short cables (under 60cm) are frustrating if your port is recessed. Measure the distance from port to where you'll hold the scanner, then add slack.
3. Shielding
Shielded cables resist electrical interference. If you've had intermittent "no communication" errors, shielding is often the fix.
4. Pin Configuration
For standard OBD2, all 16 pins should be wired. For adapters (20-pin, 9-pin), check that all relevant pins are connected—cheap adapters often skip transmission and ABS pins.
5. Build Quality
Look for:
- Gold-plated contacts
- Molded strain relief
- Durable PVC or rubber jacket
- Secure locking tab on the connector
