What Is an XLR Cable?
XLR cables use a circular 3-pin connector (sometimes 4 or 5 pins). They're the standard for professional microphones, mixers, PA systems, and studio gear.
Why Balanced Matters
A balanced XLR cable carries the audio signal on two conductors plus a ground. Any noise picked up along the cable is canceled at the destination. This allows runs of 50+ meters without hum.
Pin Configuration
- Pin 1: Ground
- Pin 2: Positive (hot)
- Pin 3: Negative (cold)
Male vs Female
- Male XLR: Plugs into devices (mixers, speakers)
- Female XLR: Receives the male plug (microphones, DI boxes)
What to Look For
Shielding. Braided or foil shield around the conductors.
Connector brand. Neutrik and Switchcraft are industry standards.
Cable gauge. 20–24 AWG is typical for mic cables.
Strain relief. Essential for stage use where cables get yanked.
Common Uses
- Microphone to mixer
- Mixer to powered speakers
- Studio monitors (balanced connection)
- Stage lighting (DMX uses 5-pin XLR)
